The 4-month sleep changes

What happens around 4 months

Many babies who were sleeping in longer stretches suddenly start waking more often around 3 to 4 months. This is commonly called the "4-month sleep regression," but it is really a permanent change in how your baby sleeps โ€” a sign of development, not a step backward.

Why sleep changes

Around this age, a baby's sleep matures to cycle more like an adult's, with lighter phases between deeper sleep. Babies briefly wake between cycles and, if they are used to being fed or rocked all the way to sleep, may need help to settle again.

What can help

  • Keep a calm, consistent wind-down before sleep
  • Watch wake windows so your baby isn't overtired
  • Give your baby a chance to settle when they stir, before rushing in
  • Practice putting your baby down drowsy but awake when you can
  • Keep the sleep space dark and quiet

It is a phase of progress

This period usually settles over a few weeks as your baby adjusts. There is no single "right" approach โ€” do what feels sustainable for your family, and remember that consistency helps more than perfection.

When to check with a professional

Talk to your pediatrician if the change is accompanied by poor feeding, illness, or weight concerns, or if you are struggling and would like support. There is no need to manage exhaustion alone.
